Optimizing Storage Technologies to Improve Efficiency, Reduce Energy Consumption, and Extend the Availability of Canadian Apples for Domestic and Export Markets

By optimizing storage regimes and utilizing the available multiple storage technologies, this study is aimed at improving efficiency, reducing energy consumption, and extending the availability of Canada apples for domestic and export markets.

Project objectives

  • Establish methods to control CO2 (carbon dioxide) injury to apples in controlled atmosphere; storage facilities without using the scald inhibitor diphenylamine (DPA);
  • Determine DPA residues throughout storage facilities;
  • Optimize storage regimes for Honeycrisp and Gala apples;
  • Determine effects of cooling rate on apple quality after storage.
